I discovered the career I wanted in the summer of 1991. That was my first summer attending Camp Chikopi as a young camper. Spending seven weeks with so many people who loved sports and outdoor pursuits had me wondering, what would I have to do to achieve a job that emulated the joy that the people around me had? The enthusiasm that I saw in both campers and staff alike was infectious. Under Bob's mentorship, I learned at a young age that it is possible to lead a large group with grace, kindness, and fun if you provide activities that give campers an energetic outlet to learn from.
It has been 30 years since my first summer at Camp Chikopi, and I still bring Bob’s philosophy into my classroom as a teacher. During my career as a teacher, I have taught all of the grades. Yet, my greatest joy has been the years spent instructing gym class and outdoor education, where I have been proud to carry on the Camp Chikopi traditions of learning and experiencing through play.
When you spend your day doing what you love, you become a life-long learner. There is no-where that this philosophy is more apparent than at Camp Chikopi, where the campers return summer after summer until they become staff, where the staff age graciously into their 80's and continue to find their place waiting for them at Chikopi each summer, and the strong alumni presence who have sent generations of sons to Chikopi.
