Bob Duenkel
Camp Chikopi Director Since 1980
Dear Old or Ancient Camper,
This letter may catch many of you by surprise. Yes! Camp Chikopi is well and operating just like it did over 90 years ago when Matt Mann II opened his first season on beautiful Ahmic Lake. Since that first year, thousands of boys have benefited from that great Chikopi experience under the tutelage and coaching of Matt, then his son, Mattie. RoseMary and her husband, Buck Dawson, owned and managed the camp for several years with the help of Pat Hayhurst as Director. Bob Duenkel is now the Director he has been associated with Chikopi since 1976.
Many of you have fond memories of the Mann Family and the many unforgettable experiences, which you had at one of North America’s first sports camp, and the first ever established swim camp. Matt could not have known that Chikopi’s wilderness site and his philosophy of sport and life would be values so sound that they are needed today more than ever. 1920’s old fashioned values are applied to the boys as they learn social skills today in the 21
st Century.
We want to revive your association with Chikopi, to rekindle and revive the comraderie and friendships you had during your years at camp. Through the Chikopi Website and Newsletters we will keep you abreast with what has happened at Chikopi since you were there and with the friends you made while at camp, some of whom you have lost track of and so have we.
Below is a questionnaire for us to get some current information on where you are and what you are doing. The MainHouse fire of 1954 burned many of our original records. We are currently setting up an official “Facebook” site where it will be fun to set up a network of names and faces from the past. As Matt Mann II said. “The only way to get it done is to do it.”
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
