28 years old, swimmer living in Boston chose Roberval race before retiring. He had never started the journey of 32 km despite its victory in 2010 to 25 km during the World Championships. His only involvement is now permeated forever in the history of the event.
"It's a dream come true for me who wanted this race for a long time. The Crossing is a special event and this victory is priceless. It's a nice way to go, "Meyer launched a satisfied and exhausted.
By winning in 6 h 27 min 59 sec, the representative of the country of Uncle Sam succeeded Quebecers Xavier Desharnais, who won the previous two editions.
The story could however have been very different for the winner who has experienced the early difficulties to resist the cold water temperature. Mother nature then came to help future champion.
"I was very cold during the first half hour and I almost gave up. I shivered and it was very difficult. Fortunately, the sun is out, the waves have calmed down a bit and I felt better, "Meyer told.
A duet in front
Meyer doubled the Italian Edoardo Stochino with about 2 km to go after both athletes are exchanged head several times. "I tried to choose the right moment to attack and I felt it was more tired with about an hour to swim," said the American.
He will extend his career after this victory? For now, the new monarch of Lac Saint-Jean will not depart from its original plan.
"Nobody can predict the future, but right now, I'll take a break from swimming and concentrate on other activities. I know I'm going back to Roberval for this event, perhaps not for swimming, but as a coach or simply to attend, "assured Meyer.
Lack of energy
Stochino, who scored the same result in 2013, acknowledged that he had not enough energy in the tank to compete with his opponent. A reason wiped out his chances, he said.
"I suspected that Meyer was going back to my feet after passing. European Championships two weeks ago have tired me, and I ran out of gas and speed. It is a weakness on which Meyer took advantage. That said, I'm very happy with this result, "said the 28-year-old.
